We offer several types of scans from boxes of photos, slides, negatives and other film media to capturing original artwork up to 6′ x 4′ or even larger!

Pile of film media

We are not some huge factory located “somewhere” in the USA but a small scan and print studio in Searsport, Mid Coast Maine. Every job we have will pass through my hands and I will do everything that I can to make sure your valuable media is looked after as if it was my own.

For photo prints, slides, negatives or any film-based media you simply ship them to us, or you can drop them off in Searsport or Bangor. If you can’t drop them off, we recommend shipping with UPS or FedEx 2nd day and send us the tracking number. When received we will immediately contact you and give you a total price estimate with options. When you accept, or choose options you want, we will formalize the estimate and send you an invoice by email, you can pay by PayPal, credit or debit card or even send us a check. When we receive payment, we will immediately begin work and when completed send you the images on-line through our own upload service, or GoogleDrive, OneDrive or dropbox. If you prefer, and for extra cost, we can also put them on a CD/DVD drive or thumb drive.

When you have had a chance to check them and approve, we will ship the original media back to you via FedEx or UPS and send you the tracking number.

We are not resposible for any loss or damage caused by the carrier so please pack carefully and choose an option that can be tracked.

All media should be sorted into similar sizes. The scanned images will be named by your family name or any name you wish to provide with a scan number e.g. SmithFamily_001. If you wish to sort groups by date or event we will attempt to name them accordingly, please separate each batch (minimum 10 for prints, 12 for slides and 6 for negatives) with a note with the name required.

We scan by default in sRGB and save as JPG files unless notified otherwise, individual scans can be scanned in sRGB or AdobeRGB in 8 or 16 bits. Files can be saved as JPG (8 bit only), TIF or PSD.

Photo Prints – batch scans

Prints are usually turned around in 24-48 hours, and will be scanned at 300 dpi – we automatically save the original and an automatically enhanced copy (so you get two images of each print). We can also scan the backs of the prints if desired and if there is any notation on them. There is no extra charge for this service.

A 300 dpi print is suitable for emailing, uploading to the web (Facebook, Instagram etc) and we can make prints at the original size or even a little larger. If you require larger files we also offer a 600 dpi option which would allow much larger prints or the ability to crop images. We can scan all prints at 600 dpi or any section of 10 or more.

35 mm Slides and Negatives – batch scanning

This is more complex task than scanning prints as we have to load each slide or negative individually in carriers of 12 (slides) or 3 strips of up to 6 images per strip (35 mm negatives).

It is less expensive than individual scans, we do not edit them in any way except to automatically remove dust and scratches. Thay are scanned at 2400 dpi which is similar to a 7 Mpix digital camera or 7″ x 11″ print @300 dpi. This is more than enough resolution to upload to social media or email.

As it’s difficult to tell how slides, or especially negatives, will turn out these batch scans allow us to inexpensively produce images that you can select any individual image you may want larger or enhanced.

Turnaround is normally 2 – 3 days depending on quantity.

Slides

Individual scans (35mm, 2.1/4,  6 x 4, 6 x 6, 6 x 9, 8 x 10)

We can scan any film based media individually at any requested resolution up to 6400 dpi which is the equivalent of a 20″ x 30″ print @300 dpi for 35 mm media and much bigger for larger media. We can either make a simple scan without any editing, except basic dust and scratch removal, or for a small extra charge we can make some simple edits and AI image enhancement.

Turnaround is normally 2 – 3 days depending on quantity.

Flat Art (or 3D) scans

For smaller flat art up to 20 x 30″ we use a flat bed scanner, works must be removed from frames and able to be laid flat. For images over that size we photograph in studio, works can be framed and even behind glass. We use a 240 Mpix Camera and two banks of 900W HID Hot lights to light the work.

For difficult reflective surfaces we can cross polarize the lights and camera to remove glare. Images are captured at up 240 Mpix which is the equivalent of around 80 x 52″ at print size and could be even larger if required. The works can be flat or dimensional.

It is possible to photograph large works on site.
